Abstract


The purpose of this study was to obtain the information for the improvement of the support on water fluoridation program from the residents in jinju, Korea. Water fluoridation program in Jinju was introduced in 1998. This survey had been begun in 1997 before the introduction of water fluoridation program, and annually had been carried out until 2000.
Questionnaires were distributed to the parents of primary schoolchildren and their responses were collected. Items of questionnaires were kinds of water for drinking, cooking, toothbrushing and acknowledgement, media to obtain the acknowledgement, purpose, safety, support, recognition of the effect of water fluoridation program on dental caries. All collected data were analyzed using the SPSS program.
The obtained results were as follows:
1. The mean percentage of respondents using the tap water for drinking was 66.7% for 4 years.
2. The mean percentage of respondents using the tap water for cooking was 84.5% and the mean percentage of respondents using the purified water with the water purifier at home .for cooking 14.2%.
Most respondents in Jinju were estimated to ingest the fluoridated water through food.
3. The percentage of respondents who knew the plan of water fluoridation program was only 23.5% in 1997 before the introduction of the fluoridation program. However, it was greatly increased after the introduction of the fluoridation program in 1998 and it reached 58.7% in 2000.
4. Concerning the professional opinion on the effectiveness on the caries prevention by continuous water

fluoridation program, the responses of `absolutely correct¢¥ and `maybe correct¢¥ were 63.7% in 1997 and increased to 74.2% in 2000.
5. Concerning the professional opinion on the safety of water fluoridation program, the responses of absolutely correct¢¥ and `maybe correct¢¥ were 49.2% in 1997 and increased to 62.5% in 2000.
6. Concerning the approval of water fluoridation program, 61.4% of respondents answered that the program was ¢¥very good¢¥ or ¢¥good¢¥, 7.5%, `very wrong¢¥ or ¢¥wrong¢¥, and 33%; didn¢¥t know about it .
7. The rate of acknowledge and positive opinion on the caries preventive effect and safety of water fluoridation program was higher in female than in male and higher among respondents who knew the program previously than among respondents who didn¢¥t know about the program,
